FRANK GEHRY at the centre Pompidou

Christophe Paris

Gehry is the architect of the improbable, the impossible and the timeless. A stunning work, brilliant, creative, beyond all known architectural references.

The exhibition, impressive, consisting of sketches, plans, models and photographs takes the visitor away from the usual feelings of a contemporary art exhibition but leaves him  just as enthralled.
The first contact that seems to impact the curiosity of the spectator remains the first sketches of each building.  The visitor is often skeptical in front of to these scribbles  usually done to make sure that your pen writes properly, impossible to foresee anything even through multiple digressions almost unreadable. In the manner of an Einstein who was seeing the world "a bit more" than the ordinary people, Gehry is the visionary of his own sketches while exploding all the standards of the genre.
We remain puzzled as to the intellectual journey to arrive at the final building. Pure brain
However, his approaches are natural and accessible, no need to take the flyer for a blond like me , the choices appear clear and legible. The visitor understands even better thanks to the mock ups from pieces of papers and carton that highlight the foundations of his work as an architect, a simplicity revealing the quintessence of architectural approach.
The structures are heckled in all directions, curves and edges meet, clash, straight lines plunge , the volumes take their ease when others seem wanting to jump into the void, with this obsession to do otherwise, to explode  the principles engraved in stone. You can feel the energy of an artist on some copies however made of paper but seeming to be a piece of clay roughly worked. Frank Gehry is from a new genre, as Zaha Hadid another priestess of new habitat also Pritzker Prize, he is not an architect, he is an archisculpteur. But he's more than that; some criticize his predation on the market, the fact that he accepts easily the demands of sponsors even if they are surpassing the works that could be exposed
Still, he was able to surpass his knowledge, to question constantly his references on all subjects attached to his specialty while soaking artistic trends of his time transforming them into new structures. With the advent of large computers and computing applications calculating masses and material resistance, achievements have become even more complex, extravagant. Digital brushes sculpting a different way of life constantly defying the laws of gravity. Some are lucky enough to live, work or walk in these beautiful buildings. Living in a sculpture, what a happiness. "Hey Santa Claus can I have one please?”

As the great artists Gehry drags its share of controversy and detractors, why not, but is it really necessary? Judging the time spent by each visitor  hypnotized by some photos embellished of zooms as slow as a snail under sedative, it is clear that this great architect does not only provide shelter for souls and bodies, he fascinates them and seduces  them.
